Built for Alberta buyers
A raw VIN decode is the same everywhere. Buying used in Alberta isn’t. We layer in the provincial steps a generic decoder ignores — the Personal Property Registry lien search, AMVIC dealer licensing, and the out-of-province inspection — so the checks reflect the actual paperwork you’ll deal with at the registry.

Is the Alberta VIN check really free?+
Yes. Entering a VIN to see recalls, owner complaints, and safety ratings is completely free, with no account required. A paid full vehicle history report — accident, ownership, title, and lien records — is available separately through our partner.
What does a free VIN check show me?+
It decodes the vehicle (make, model, year, body, engine) and shows open safety recalls, owner complaints, and crash-test ratings from NHTSA. It does not show accident history, past owners, or liens, which require a full history report and, in Alberta, a Personal Property Registry search.
Can I check a lien on a vehicle in Alberta?+
You check liens through Alberta’s Personal Property Registry (PPR) by VIN at a registry agent. Our lien-search guide explains the process. A lien follows the vehicle, so this check protects you from inheriting someone else’s debt.
Do I need a VIN check if I’m buying from a dealer?+
It still helps. Buying from an AMVIC-licensed dealer gives you consumer protections, but a recall check and history report are still worth doing. For private sales, confirming the seller’s AMVIC status also helps you avoid unlicensed curbstoners.
Is this an official Government of Alberta service?+
No. Alberta VIN Check is an independent service and is not affiliated with the Government of Alberta, AMVIC, or any government agency. We link to official sources for processes and current fees.
